Flu Strikes Students at TU

TOWSON, Md—Despite the numerous increase of students catching the flu last year due to the flu-like H1N1 virus, this year has been a decrease in students catching the flu.

“I don’t know whether there has been a decrease in students catching the flu because they go to their healthcare provider,” Registered Nurse Doreen Rolker said. “But they aren’t coming [to Dowell Health Center].”

The most frequent time for students to catch the flu is between the months of January to the end of March.

To help students avoid catching the flu and making frequent visits to the health center or regular physician, students are encouraged to wash their hands frequently, eat a healthy diet which includes vegetables and fruits, get adequate rest and highly recommended to get the flu shot.

Some signs and symptoms of having the flu are: coughing, fever, sore throat, fatigue, headache and body aches. If you have experienced any of these, you are advised to stay home, get plenty of rest, drink a lot of non-caffeine drinks, eat a light diet and get over the counter medicine for the symptoms such as Tylenol and Advil.

To help students from catching the flu, the Dowell Health Center is administrating flu shots for the cost of $15 which can be paid up front, on your Towson OneCard or added to your tuition bill.
